Facebook: finally making mobile work

Facebook: finally making mobile work

The social network's breakthrough in mobile adverts saw shares sore and morale surge. Matt Warman reports on the company's achievements

Facebook Phone launch

Just three months ago, Facebook was under the kosh from investors: the word on Wall Street was that the world’s biggest social network, already well down on its $38 flotation price, was losing users and struggling as most of its existing ones viewed the service primarily on their mobile phones. Yesterday, results showed the opposite: the company’s profits swung from a loss of $157m to a profit of $333m – mobile advertising made up 41 per cent of that, rising from less than a third.
The message from Mark Zuckerberg was clear: each user spends more time on Facebook now than ever, and those 17 minutes per day are going to become more valuable as time goes on. The company’s shares surged 30 per cent.
Speaking to investors, Zuckerberg said that the company was focusing on a mixture of mobile users and young people. While Google openly admitted that its own advertising revenues were coming under pressure from the smaller screens imposed by mobiles, Zuckerberg told investors that Facebook use was holding up well, revenues were substantially up, and teenagers in particular were using the site as much as ever. If the acquisition of photo app Instagram was taken into account too, the numbers look even better.
Asked directly about teen use of the social network, Zuckerberg was both honest and open: “It's difficult to measure this perfectly because some young people lie about their age," he said. But he added that reports of his social network's hemorrhaging mobile-savvy teenagers were simply inaccurate. “Based on our data that just isn't true," he said. Activity for teens has been steady for the past 18 months, he said, and the inclusion of Instagram would show a rise. “People on average are spending more time on Facebook than ever before."
Better still, "Facebook has discovered the formula to begin significantly extracting value from its 1.16 billion global users," said JMP Securities analyst Ronald Josey. He raised his rating on the stock to "market outperform" from "market perform" and said the company was increasingly becoming a "must buy" for advertisers.
This is not to pretend that all is rosy in the Facebook garden: a Piper Jaffray survey found that just one third of teenagers said Facebook was their most important social network. But a look at the network’s own users reveals a number of key facts: while 70pc of monthly active users visit via mobile, up 51pc year-on-year, and one in five, 219m, are mobile only, Facebook has more than a million active advertisers, and they are increasingly content with the company’s mobile advertising proposition.
It’s worth asking how Facebook has engineered such a rapid turnaround on its own platform: for a start, internally, Zuckerberg turned off Facebook.com for a week – he forced his own staff to use the mobile apps. Little wonder that both iPhone and Android users in particular suddenly found that apps were substantially improved. “If the people that make them have to live with them,” a Facebook source said, “then improvement was inevitable.”
So the company has adapted to include a mobile engineering component for every team, meaning that each product conforms to the site’s aspiration of mobile first and mobile best. It is, after all, how most new users will increasingly encounter any given service.
As Cory Bergman, the general manager of NBC’s Breaking News put it, “Facebook’s mobile presence is greater than every media company’s mobile footprint combined. Zuckerberg says his goal is to make it the best personalized newspaper on the planet, and with 819 million mobile monthly active users and 1 million advertisers, he’s off to a good start.” The site is increasingly the lens through which not only its users see their friends, but also through which whole categories of web browsers see the entire internet.
Facebook’s earnings per share of 13 cents on revenue of $1.81 billion beat analysts’ expectations of 14 cents on $1.62 billion. The key piece of information the company said it had learnt was that, whether on mobile or on desktop, “News Feed ads work”. Chief Financial Officer David Ebersman claimed “They’re really creating compelling returns for our advertisers.” And video adverts are coming next: "Facebook's massive audience should be irresistible to brand advertisers as the company preps to launch 15-second video ads, which could be Facebook's next billion-dollar business," analysts at Jefferies & Co wrote in a note.
Facebook’s daily active users are now up to 699 million, up 27pc year on year. Each month 1.15 billion users log on, up 21 percent increase year on year. But on mobile there are 819 million monthly active users, up 51pc year over year.
“We’ve made good progress growing our community, deepening engagement and delivering strong financial results, especially on mobile,” claimed Zuckerberg. “The work we’ve done to make mobile the best Facebook experience is showing good results and provides us with a solid foundation for the future.”
While that may sound like hyperbole, for once a company’s chief executive may yet be reflecting the reality: Facebook knows it must get to grips with mobile. And where Google is struggling, despite building the Android operating system that now powers most phones, Facebook is thriving. It may yet even be worth what it was when it floated.

BlackBerry lays off 250 workers in Canada

The BlackBerry Z10

The embattled BlackBerry will reduce its staff following a disappointing first six months of 2013.
BlackBerry has laid off 250 workers at a Waterloo, Ontario product-testing facility, the companyconfirmed to Bloomberg on Thursday. The jobs were cut in areas that support manufacturing and research and development, according to the BlackBerry spokesperson who confirmed the news to Bloomberg.
BlackBerry's layoffs are just the latest in a string of bad news from the company, which has so far tried unsuccessfully to regain its once-stable footing in the mobile market.BlackBerry 10, the operating system that was supposed to put the company back into play against iOS and Android, has largely fallen flat, and its Z10 touch-screen phone failed to appeal to consumers to the degree to which the company had hoped.
Meanwhile, BlackBerry has seen shareholders abandon it in droves. Since the beginning of 2013, BlackBerry shares are down 24 percent to $9.04.
Despite the cuts, BlackBerry is still a massive company with nearly 13,000 employees.

Google Nexus 7 unveiled, priced at $229

Google

Google is introducing a sleeker version of its Nexus 7 tablet as the Internet company escalates its battle with Apple and Amazon.com in the mobile computing market.
Google also announced a $35 device that will let you watch Netflix, YouTube and other content on a high-definition TV. Simply plug the Chromecast into the TV's HDMI port, and it'll display content from your phone, tablet or laptop.
The Chromecast is available right away, while the new Nexus 7 devices go on sale in the U.S. on Tuesday. It's available in Google's online store and various other retailers. Google made the announcement Wednesday at an event in San Francisco.
The extra firepower added to the second generation of Nexus 7 tablets will come with a higher price. A model with 16 gigabytes of storage will sell for $229, a $30 per increase from the original Nexus 7 released a year ago. That's still 30 per cent below the $329 that Apple Inc. charges for its iPad Mini. A comparable Kindle Fire HD tablet from Amazon.com Inc. currently sells for $199.
A 32-gigabyte version of the Nexus 7 for $269, a $20 price increase.
Google Inc. says the new line of Nexus tablets boasts a higher-definition 7-inch (17.5-centimeter) display screen and a processor that promises to be nearly as twice as fast. Dual stereo speakers have been added for richer sound, and the device's battery duration has been extended by about an hour. The Nexus 7 will also be the first device to get the 4.3 version of its Android software.

iPhone 5 release date: New information about the features of iPhone 5 arrive

For Apple fans, the launch of the iPhone 5proves to be very exciting. Although, iPhonelovers are increasingly losing patience over theiPhone 5 release date rumors. It will probably not be long now until we get concrete information about the iPhone 5, and if the actual presentation will be 07 August 2012.
There are many indications of a release of the iPhone 5 that day. Other analysts assume that Apple will stick to a publication date in the fall of 2012.
Earlier reports suggest Apple is currently at the stage of "Engineering Verification Test", abbreviated EVT. This test is now in the third phase. Following the EVT, Apple traditionally follows with the "Design Verification Test" (DVT). If these tests are completed successfully, production can start.
There have also been reports that mass production has already been started.
Will the iPhone 5 have a nano-SIM chip?
The reports that the iPhone 5 will possess the much smaller nano-SIM card, appear to be accurate. They require much less space because they consist only of the metal of the chip, and the associated support material. This would in addition imply that the new smartphone from Apple, will be significantly thinner than its predecessor.
The nano-SIM card with dimensions of 12.3 x 8.8 x 0.67 mm is much smaller than the previously used micro-SIM card. The order of millions of nano-SIM cards indicated by European mobile operators suggest that this technology will be applied to the new iPhone 5. These mobile operators want to take no chances in the shortage of supply in relation to the SIM cards.
What about the NFC chip?
Some time ago there was talk that the iPhone 5 will be equipped with an NFC chip. These rumors seem to progress further, and it is now considered almost certain that this technology is on board with the new Apple smartphone. The NFC chip allows the transmission of data over short distances between two NFC-enabled devices.
In this way, cashless payment via the mobile device is possible. The competition has the NFC technology already, Apple has passed it up thus far. It is assumed that the iPhone will follow suit here now, and be equipped in any case with the NFC chip. By doing this, the payment service Google Wallet, is directly targeted by Apple. The new iPhone 5 will appear with the Passbook technology, accordingly. This is integrated into the new operating system iOS 6.
Is the LTE technology available?
After it was reported a few weeks ago about delays from the manufacturers of LTE chips, this is attributed to the fact that Apple has ordered large quantities. Surely this will come with the iPhone 5, in order for a transfer speed of 4 GB to be possible. It is believed to use an LTE chip that can transmit not only data but also FaceTime, and thus the LTE technology would be possible. Due to the increased requirements in terms of data speed and graphics memory it would probably be increased by 1 GB.
Many new jobs for the production of the iPhone 5
The latest release from Chinese blog MICGadget says the gates of the production of the new iPhone 5 in China are packed, specifically in Zhengzhou, the workers are lining up to do some work for Foxconn. However, there are only small quantities being built and then mass production to begin after. Supposedly, only five copies are produced of the iPhone 5 in its final form there on a night shift. iPhone 5 rumors begin to come together

iPhone 5 rumors begin to come together :
Every year at WWDC, Apple generally talks about their latest iPhone that is being produced. Last year, however, was different. Instead of discussing the iPhone 5, they unveiled iCloud and and iOS 5. This has lead to much more speculation over what the next iPhone will look like and even when it will be released. Here are just a few of the unconfirmed rumors.
Larger screen
The screen on the iPhone 4 and 4S is 3.5 inches. This seems to be the perfect size for casual gamers, but it limits professional use. The iPhone 5 is said to have a 4 inch screen, making it appeal more to the business crowd, as using apps like Pages and Keynotes will be even easier. That brings up a very thought provoking argument on ZDNet (be sure to read the comments).
Thinner screen
New technology, called in-cell, has been made available which will integrate touch capabilities into the LCD, which means that it will be about half a millimeter thinner. It is also expected to make the overall quality of the screen better.
Smaller port
Amid all of the exciting news, this has to be the least anticipated or wanted. Rumors tell that Apple will be changing from the classic 30-pin port down to a 19-pin. What that means for any of you who don't know is that all of your iPhone accessories that plug into your phone will now be useless on the new iPhone.
